Storm Chasing

Postby vermont204 » Sun Jul 26, 2009 9:03 pm

During a severe thunderstorm, a Stowe Northern local does its daily run with the constant threat of a lightning strike.

Now Crossing one of the few crossings on the line. The crew now has word that a tornado has been spotted ahead and to reduce speed.

The local is encountering heavy winds. Notice the telephone poles along the track.

Shortly after, the train was hit by the tornado, derailing and tossing the empty tankers at the end of the train.

I thought to myself, "Now there's a young man who is really having fun with this simulation!"

Max, super nice work on the scenery; weather and all. I can hear the wind and feel the rain right through the screen - and the downed pole reminds me of Seattle in October (that's why I live in California).

Very interesting story too. Hope no one was hurt :(

This storm is why there are bent and downed telephone poles along the route. The storm actually happened here in 2008 and realistically several tornadoes were spotted. Casualties-One horse that was struck by lightning.

The storm was when everyone was getting on busses heading home from shcool. I have never seen green clouds before, and it is really eere. Especially when lightning struck not far from the bus. When I got off the bus, I don't think I ran faster in my life! And I was right. You wouldn't want to be stuck out in this storm.

Sorry for getting a little off topic

Not off topic at all. You shed some light on the motivation for your scene. It makes the screen shots all the more powerful knowing they were a re-creation of an actual event in your life.

Poor horse.

Hmmm, lets see, the topic is Storm Chasing. That could mean two things: you chasing a storm; or a storm chasing you! :o

Looks 'on topic' to me. Hope the front door was enough protection.

It's usually one followed by the other, lol. I grew up in the midwest and vividly remember that sick green color in the sky that would come right before all hell broke loose...

Someone should create an env file to model those ghostly green clouds. Oh man, that would be creepy! ya, I saw that green cloud while watcing a funnel form as I was getting on the school bus. One of the scariest moments of my life. During the real storm, the school principal actually told us: "Listen up! Were under a tornado warning. If you do not have a ride home, come to the office so you can arrange one ASAP. As for you taking the bus, be careful, the bus drivers know what they are doing."

I got off the bus and ran up my road as fast as I could. Coming around the bend, I saw a massive bolt of lightning light up the sky. No sooner did I get into my house, did the rain start...hard rain...

Heres a shot from another train, of the tornado that derailed the local freight.

Can't you just hear the engineer reporting a tornado in Northern Vermont and how surprised everyone would be?
