Between 1948 and
1954, Baldwin Locomotive Works (and later Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton)
produced the DRS-6-6-1500 and AS616 six-axle road switcher. The
initial DRS-6-6-1500 produced 1,500 horsepower while the
follow-up AS616 added 100 more horsepower. These heavy brutes
were known by railroaders for their great tractive effort at low
speed, but their relatively low production numbers prevented
them from becoming as famous as EMD's competing SD-series.
